The reach and reputation of Festival of Voices has grown far and wide. It has become known internationally as a special meeting place for singers to come and sing, share and hang out with each other. The educational component of the festival is also significant. It has become a winter school for people who want to learn new repertoires, sing better or just revel in the joy of group singing.
The first Tasmanian winter festival to introduce bonfires as a central theme, the iconic image of thousands singing around the fire in Salamanca Place is legendary. This is always a highlight and reflects the core aim of the festival – to bring people together, not just as observers but as participants as well.
Catering for all interests and ages, the festival features performers of choral, contemporary and cabaret with highlights such as:
Tasmania Sings – featuring over 600 young performers from schools across the state.
Singers Lounge – Between major choral events and performances by cabaret artists, actors, jazz and contemporary singers from around Australia and overseas, festival goers head to The Singers Lounge where the stage is open and the space is welcome to all who love to sing.
Pop Up Events – By day there are the dozens of pop-up choir performances in and around the streets and public spaces of Hobart and surrounds. Many of these are performed by visiting choirs who come to the festival especially to sing at this event!
Finale Concert – where all the workshop participants get to showcase their voices in a major spine tingling concert featuring over 400 performers.
This participatory nature of Festival of Voices is what makes the festival so unique and what draws everyone out of their homes mid-winter to celebrate the power of voice, through songs, stories and connection.
Festival of Voices truly is a joyful time to be in Tasmania.
